La Cañada Gladiators 22, Claremont Wolf Pack 6

The Jr. Pee Wee Gladiators put together another resounding victory against the Clairmont Wolf Pack 22-6 on Sunday afternoon at Claremont High School. The Gladiators are now 2-1-1 for the season.

The Wolf Pack started out fast with a touchdown in their first possession, but from then on it was all La Cañada, who scored 22 unanswered points.

The defense controlled the game led by Mario Martinez, who intercepted a goal line pass to stop the Wolf Pack in their tracks. Thomas Stea and John Monroe each sacked the quarterback with Max Burcher and Drew Sarceda having multiple tackles for losses. Danny Pardo and Augy Saucedo coupled with Michael Doud and Jack Rappard for another drive ending sack. The D line dominated with the front guys Theo Chamberlain, Brian Erickson, Jason Rowton, backed by Angel Salazar at safety.

The offensive line of Robert Rothrock, Eli Fazzi, Anthony Saravia, and Anthony Guerrero and Able Fernandez at Center played well all day, opening holes for the Gladiator running backs.

La Cañada Gladiators 56, Claremont Wolf Pack 25

On a chilly, overcast Sunday, the Gladiators traveled to the Claremont High School where they defeated the Claremont Wolf Pack 56-25. The Gladiators are now 4-0 on the season.

On the opening kickoff, Ross Niederhaus again was first to the ball, cracking down the returner at the 26 yard line. The defense, led by Sean Bloks, Kyle Tavizon, Skyler Payne, Sam Brown and Ernesto Juaregui, forced a punt, which was returned by the elusive Kyle Cheung 47 yards to the Wolf Pack 8-yard line. Quarterback Cheung rang up the scoreboard on a nifty scramble, which was followed by an extra point run by Tavizon to make the score 7-0.

The Wolf Pack narrowed the score on its next possession, cutting the Gladiator lead to 7-6. After a key 22 yard run by Tavizon on a 4th down sweep, Jaurgui "dipped and slipped" his way to pay dirt after 32 yards to up the score to 13-6. Joey McClure dashed it in for the conversion increasing the Gladiator lead to remained 14-6.

The Gladiator defense, which had pitched three previous shut-outs, had its hands full with the Wolf Pack offense. Chris Harb, Andrew Dehne, Joey Robertson, Dominic Aguilar, Charlie Bednar, Robert Benson, Gunnar Trowbridge, Greg Stupakis, Colin DuCharme, Joe Reilly, Jack Reilly, Bryan Esparza, and Travis Westhoff help execute a well-schemed defense.

A shanked Wolfpack punt enabled the Gladiators to begin their next possession at the Claremont 27 yd line. After Tavizon took a handoff and rumbled to the 3-yard line, Cheung threw a shot touchdown pass to to Niederhaus. The point after was good on a sprint to the pylon by Cheung to make the score 21-6.

Claremont answered quickly on a 58-yard scoring run and reduced the Gladiator lead to 21-12. The quick Gladiator offense responded quickly with a spectacular 34-yard scoring run by Juaregui. The punishing Tavizon tacked on the extra point to up the score to 28-12. Claremont’s next scoring drive was stalled when Cheung intercepted a pass, setting up a 5-yard run by Juaregui. On the last possession of the half, Benson scored to to stretch the Gladiator lead to 35-12.

The Gladiators began the third quarter where they left off, after a fumble recovery by Juaregui and a key 34-yard run by the hard charging Tavizon, Juaregui swept into the end zone and McClure added the extra point to increase the Gladiator lead to 42-12 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

With the score heavily lopsided, the Gladiator staff substituted liberally, and the Wolf Pack offense managed two final score in the final period. But the the Gladiator offense also continued to score behind the well-schooled execution by Sean Davitt, Matt Erickson, Alex Espinosa, Michael Reilly, Larkin Iverson, Troy Eggertson, Christopher Basso, Matthew Perasso and Cameron Chavez. Jr. Midgets

La Cañada Gladiators 24, Claremont Wolf Pack 20

The La Cañada Junior Midgets made it two in a row with a tough victory against the Claremont Wolf Pack 24 to 20 on a beautiful sunny afternoon last Sunday at Claremont High School.

The Gladiator defense was dominating throughout the game, led by the devastating play of strong safety Joshua Yoon. After the Gladiator defense stopped the Wolfpack on their first two possessions, Yoon tipped a pass that was intercepted by Anthony Parada who returned it for the Gladiators’ first score of the game, giving the Gladiators a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

After the Gladiator defense shut down Claremont with no first downs allowed in the first quarter, the Gladiator offense took control of the game with a 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Will Lombardo to Parada to put the Gladiators up 12-0. Parada made a great adjustment on the ball with most of the yardage gained after the catch.

The Wolf Pack closed the lead on their next possession, but were unable to mount another drive. Their lone scoring threat was stifled by an interception by Yoon. The Gladiators closed out the first half with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Lombardo to tight end Yoon. At halftime, the Gladiators held the lead 18-6.

The Gladiator running game continued to be powered by the stalwart offensive line of Justin Petrie, Jonathan Sotoodeh, Sam Peplow, Christian Woodward, Adam Rowton, Hunter Trowbridge, Clyde Mesa, and Tyler Laskey, tight ends Remy Madarietta and Todd Murray, and the pesky receiving corp of Scott Platisa, Brandon Renick, Diego Sawers-Mendoza, and Mark Sassounian. QB Lombardo continued his season long habit of breaking tackles. Running backs Felkel, Michael Greenberg and Parada all ran hard and made key blocks. Parada also had a couple of long gains for first downs on reverses from his flanker position.

The Wolfpack narrowed the Gladiator lead in the 3rd quarter with another touchdown, and trailed 18 to 14 to end the period.

The Wolf Pack took the lead in the final quarter 20-18, but the lead was short-lived. The Gladiators roared back beginning with a determined 30-yard kickoff return by Sermak-Proulx. Lombardo scored a few plays later to put the Gladiators back in front, 24 to 20.

Despite allowing a few big plays, LC’s defense played another terrific game, not allowing a first down until 5 minutes remained in the 3rd quarter. The defense was led by defensive backs Yoon (several tackles in the backfield), Parada, Sermak-Proulx, Platisa and Sassounian who all made keys stops on running and passing plays. Linebackers Rowton, Laskey, Greenberg and Lombardo continued their strong play. The defensive line of Jason Reyes, Hussein Maaz, David Vardanian, Sotoodeh, Trowbridge, and Petrie plugged the line of scrimmage with their gang tackling and pressured the Wolfpack QB all day. Defensive ends Felkel, Hasan Maaz, Murray and Remy Madarieta all had a good game with several great tackles and a fumble recovery by Maaz.

The Gladiator special teams were close to flawless with several nice returns by Parada, Lombardo, and Sermak-Proulx, an onside kick recovered by Hussein Maaz, and sure tackling by all members of the squad.

The Gladiator Junior Midgets next game is against the Glendale Bears at La Cañada High School on Oct. 18 at 4 p.m.

La Cañada Gladiators 0, El Serreno 12

The La Cañada Gladiator midget squad couldn’t get anything going on offense this Saturday at Lincoln High School where they faced the El Serreno Stallions, and it was the defense that shined in a loss to the El Sereno Stallions 12-0 in front of a nice sized crowd.

Quarterback Ty Gangi had a few nice completions to Marceles Clash, and running back Jake Johnson had a few good runs, but in the end, the Gladiators could not punch it into the end zone. Although the defense gave up 12 unanswered points which were scored in the first half of the game, they played with a lot of emotion and shut the Stallions down in the second half. The unit forced five turnovers, all fumbles recovered by linebackers Zachery Washington recovered 2 fumbles and Thomas Rhee recovered 3 fumbles. Safety Jorge Escandon had a saving tackle that almost resulted in a touchdown.

The Gladiators will get back to work and prepare for their next opponent, the East L.A. Bobcats on Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. at La Cañada High School.

The Gladiator reports are provided by the team coaches.
