Federal safety regulators have opened a probe into whether model year 2000 through 2003 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable sedans suffer from incidents of stuck throttles.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has received 50 complaints from drivers saying that the throttle in those vehicles may have become stuck.
Investigators say the problem might arise from the fracture of a part called the speed control cable collar.
Regulators are looking at about 310,000 of the Ford-built vehicles equipped with 4-valve 3.0L V6 Duratec engines and will decide if the problem is severe enough to cause a recall.
