Twenty Years Ago

Faced with budget cuts, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory announced it would consolidate its workforce, cutting on-site contractors and staff members by about 1,000 over the ensuing five years.


Thirty Years Ago

After a lengthy study prompted by lower enrollment rates, La Cañada school board voted 3 to 2 to close the district's second-largest school, Foothill Intermediate School, at the end of the 1982-83 school year. Middle-school students would be taught on the La Cañada High School campus instead.


Forty Years Ago

An arsonist was starting fires in the paper goods sections of area grocery stores during the late winter of 1973. An alert grocery clerk at the Shopping Bag on Foothill Boulevard (where Sprouts is today) noticed smoke rising on the paper goods aisle one afternoon and alerted authorities. But when she tried to convince shoppers to leave the store so the fire could be extinguished, they insisted on staying and having their transactions completed first.


Fifty Years Ago

La Cañada Country Club Estates, a residential development surrounding the fairways and greens of the new golf course, was drawing people interested in inspecting homes that were almost complete and ready for occupants. The custom-designed houses were priced from $67,000; view lots were also still available and were priced from $19,000.


Sixty Years Ago

Don Mike Anthony, 14, of La Cañada, won the junior men's division of the Pacific Coast Ice Skating Championships in Seattle, qualifying for the national championship competition.
