In a year-end tradition, the La Cañada Council PTA and its various school-site PTAs on Monday held their joint installation breakfast, which this year featured a new twist: Several students were invited to present programs that had captured their attention during this past school year.

Called "Spotlight on Students," the program in past years was held separately from the PTA installation and didn't garner much attendance, said Pam Knapp, outgoing president of the Council PTA. The showcase was abandoned for a couple of years due to school testing schedules but resumed this year. It was decided to combine it with the installation so the students would have a good-sized and receptive audience.

"They've done so much for us in the schools," Knapp said of the students and their mentors, "that I think it's really valuable for us to listen to them."

The student presentations ranged from three La Cañada Elementary School students singing an a cappella round to two members of the Comedy Sportz team from La Cañada High demonstrating the high humor in that game. In between, there were explanations of science projects undertaken by LCE students, including a discussion of the dissections that took place this year by Paradise Canyon Elementary School youngsters who delved into marine science. Palm Crest Elementary School first-graders gave oral presentations of places and things they had studied. The audience was also treated to a song presented by members of the 7/8 Women's Ensemble and learned about that school's Builder's Club, among other presentations.

Following the student showcase, the new PTA officers for the coming year were introduced. Succeeding Knapp as president of the La Cañada Council PTA is Tamar Tujian. Presidents of the other PTA units in the district are Michelle Morgan, La Cañada Elementary; Melissa Mazen, Palm Crest Elementary; Sharon Rae, Paradise Canyon Elementary; Lisa Dick, LCHS 7/8; and Pati Patao, LCHS 9-12 PTSA.
