United States Naval Academy

The United States Naval Academy is a four-year military academy and higher education institution located in Annapolis, Md. It was founded in 1845 as the Naval School by U.S. Naval Secretary George Bancroft; it was renamed the U.S. Naval Academy in 1850. Originally an all-male institution, the academy admitted its first female midshipmen in 1976. In addition to an application process similar to traditional colleges, applicants to the academy must have a nomination from a source recognized by the academy, such as a senator. In addition to an application process similar to traditional colleges, applicants to the academy must have a nomination from a source recognized by the academy, such as a senator. All midshipmen start their time at the Naval Academy as plebes during "Plebe Summer," a seven-week program run by the academy that introduces plebes to Navy and academy life. Because of the inclusion of technical classes into the school's core curriculum, all graduates receive a bachelor's degree in science, no matter which major they have chosen out of the 21 that are available. In addition to traditional academic classes, midshipmen take part in an officer development program. The academy also has student organizations, including club sports, professional societies, religious clubs and musical and theater groups. The Naval Academy is a member of the Patriot League, and the Midshipmen field teams in 19 sports. Notable annual events include the Army-Navy football game and the junior year Ring Dance. Notable Naval Academy alumni include former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, astronaut Alan Shepard Jr. and Nobel Prize winner Albert A. Michelson.  « Show less
