3. The Valley Line: USC Town & Gown goes to lunch

I had a play date with my daughter, Heather, on Mother's Day weekend, a fun escape to San Francisco. On Saturday, the morning fog blanketed the city and the foghorns called out their mournful cry, giving the city such an eerie feeling.

  5. The Valley Line: Hats and flowers mark Thursday Club's fashion show

It was a lovely warm March day when the La Cañada Thursday Club held its annual fashion show luncheon. The event was a rousing welcome to spring and many of the 200 ladies attending the event were wearing their best chapeaux. It was fun to see the different hats — small "fascinators" such as what one might wear to have tea with Princess Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, to floppy-brimmed hats of bright colors just meant for an afternoon outing on a sunny day.

  7. Around Town: Just crazy about tomatoes

The seed catalogs arrived last month. The daffodils are blooming and there are tiny pomegranates on the pomegranate tree. It must be time to plant the garden. Last month, I was eager to get started. This week, I'm not so sure, but the time has come....

  13. Thoughts from Dr. Joe: Staging Shakespeare for the teenage set

I had the lead role in the fifth-grade St. Patrick's Day play at Saint Frances of Rome School. But my career ended when I threw Thomas Thouey off the stage for saying something nasty about my momma. I could have been a Shakespearean actor, but I was...

  17. The Valley Line: Wine fest previewed under a full moon; 'The Grapes of Wrath' to play at A Noise Within

Were you howling at the moon last Saturday night? We enjoyed the first full moon of 2013. Not that I usually pay any attention to the names of the full moons throughout the year, but this moon is known as the “Full Wolf Moon.” The Algonquin and Sioux tribes thus named it. Of course I wanted to know why.

  19. The Valley Line: The season of sweater weather and awards

Brrrr, has it been cold enough for you? It has been teeth-chattering weather lately. Actually, I’d rather it be like this than have to deal with triple-digit heat. There is almost no limit to how many sweaters one can put on to warm up, but one can only get so naked in order to cool off.
