After the debacle at the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861, the Union needed a decisive victory. It had to wait awhile, but the two-part victory finally came Feb. 6 at Fort Henry on the Tennessee River and on Feb. 16 just a few miles east at Fort Donelson. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant earned his nickname "Unconditional Surrender" Grant at the battle at Fort Donelson. Illinois troops saw action in both conflicts.
